An Indigenous group, the Chiefs of Ontario, is taking Ottawa to federal court over the entire carbon tax regime.

They claim the tax is unfair to people living on distant reserves with little ability to switch to other fuel options. Electric vehicles and heat pumps are unworkable. Rebates don’t match what individuals pay.
This is no isolated sentiment among First Nations.

“Its creators may call it a ‘levy’ or ‘pricing,’ but the carbon tax is just that — a tax,” writes Stephen Buffalo , president and CEO of the Indian Resource Council and a senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute.
“As such, from a First Nations perspective, it clearly violates the spirit and intent of the treaty tax exemption, which was provided in exchange for our sharing of the land.
